A bad purchase decision...at least for meJun 22, 2010 Like a nitwit, I rushed to get one of these when I read Anthony Bourdain's recommendation. I haven't had it long or used it much, but I whipped it out today to cut some slices from a tough (but fresh) baguette. I don't doubt that the knife performed as well as others of this type, but cutting up this bread with it was a serious struggle. I don't mean simply that it was not graceful and didn't feed my sense of kitchen craftsmanship; I mean that it was a tough, muscular job -- I'd say ten to fifteen seconds of forceful effort per slice.
I also happen to have a fairly new Mac Santoku knife that is scary sharp; I love dicing vegetables with it. I decided to see what it would do to this baguette and voila! It went through the baguette the way it goes through tomatoes. Well, almost that easily. It was a joy. So did I need a special bread knife? I don't think so.
Okay, the Mac Santoku is an expensive knife, especially the dimpled version that I chose. But I don't think the dimples had anything to do with the ease of slicing this baguette. The basic, 6 1/2" Mac Santoku is a little more than twice the price of this special-purpose bread knife. But when you buy the Mac you are getting both a vastly superior bread knife -- at least for crusty breads -- and one of the finest chef's knives in the world.
I was so giddy at the performance of the Santoku that I failed to try any of my other, good, smooth-blade knives. I am betting that any good chef's knife would outperform the Dick on crusty bread. And not by a little bit.
Nice for tomatoes, not for crusty bread.Mar 03, 2010 This didn't live up to my expectations, I ended up getting another bread knife, a long one from Chicago cutlery. This one just wasn't able to get a good grip on crusty bread and it could use to be at least an inch longer (TWSS). Still a decent knife for some things, but I haven't been using it at all since I got the other.
great knife great priceFeb 14, 2010 I love my knife and it works well. It was everything I hoped it would be.

A great knifeMay 05, 2009 Works like a charm. I highly recommend. I have had it for over 3 years, & it's still going strong after heavy daily use, as my all purpose knife.

Best Bread KnifeSep 04, 2008 The best bread knife I've come across! Great! Great! Great!
And it also cuts tomatoes cleanly. I'm glad I found this one and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality product.
