This is a fun little cookbook. It has a picture of every cake at the beginning of the book, which is a nice visual guide. I have made the pumpkin cake many times, and we often make it along with pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. The recipes are very easy to follow, and most of the recipes call for ingredients that you would find in any pantry. Almost all of the recipes are also fairly quick to put together. If you need a cake in a pinch, this is a great cookbook to reach for.

These cake recipes are mostly good. My favorite so far is Susan's Lemon Cake, which is a mild lemon cake with a tangy lemon glaze. The glaze recipes do have to be adjusted, as others have mentioned. Mine was thin, but it was very good. The cake texture was a bit crumbly, but it still sliced okay. Others, though, ranged from from almost-too-crumbly (Buttermilk Devil's Food) to downright-falling-apart (Applesauce Spice). The flavors, however, have all been excellent. So if you don't mind the "snack cake" textures, these are fine. If you're looking for something elegant with a fine crumb, I haven't found it yet in this book, but I haven't tried all the recipes. With the Applesauce Spice Cake, there are a few variables, like type of apples or brand of applesauce, that might have made it so crumbly. However, none of these cakes fell, and they all tasted great. I liked the flavors well enough that I will probably start tweaking a bit to get a better texture.

I purchased this book for my daughter many years ago when she was a young bride. While visiting her recently, I found myself reading through the book once again. Why I waited so long to purchase my own copy, I'll never know. Thank you for taking the extra time to detail the instructions and present such a variety of recipes.
