And if anybody knows donuts, it's Sally Levitt Steinberg, America's Donut Princess. As a member of America's royal donut dynasty (her grandfather, Adolph Levitt, invented the donut-making machine), she knows more about this sweet indulgence than anyone else. The Donut Book is the product of Sally's great personal charm and life-long, in-depth donut scholarship.
She covers high points in donut history: the arrival of the first donuts in America with the Dutch settlers in the 17th century, and the donut in World War I, when it became the favorite nosh of the boys in the trenches. She celebrates donut-loving celebrities, from Admiral Byrd to Bill Clinton, as well as some of the most gifted donut bakers on the planet. She visits the campus of Dunkin' Donuts University and reveals the secret that makes Krispy Kreme donuts irresistible. And she identifies the most popular donut in America (glazed) and the runner-up (chocolate).
Then there are the recipes: 29 mouth-watering, soul-satisfying ways to achieve the ultimate sugar rush, from New Orleans beignets to Portuguese malasadas, from Boston crèmes to Alain Ducasse's upscale Donut. And for donut lovers who are willing to hit the road to find their favorite confection, the book comes with an illustrated Donut Lover's Guide to bakeries that serve up the lightest, fluffiest, best dressed, and tastiest donuts. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

Not what I expectedJan 28, 2007
By bezoarrn I thought this book would have more recipes in it that I could use. Well, it doesn't. It's a great coffee table book. It's lovely to look at and very informative. If you're looking for the history of donuts and something to read while munching on one, here ya go. If you're looking for a cook book - look elsewhere.

Buy a doughnut instead...Dec 29, 2008
By Nicholas B. Powers I don't understand why everyone is so giggly about this book. I thought it would have many recepies and a "how to" make a great donut. The Food Channel has covered most of these donut places. I want to duplicate the kind of donuts found in these great donut places at HOME! Save your money and buy a dozen donuts instead.

DisappointingJun 23, 2009
By Happy Cooker I thought this book would have recipes for making donuts. If you are looking for the history of the donut, then this book is for you. I was disappointed as there were very few recipes and not much on icing or pictures either. I'm returning it.

This book gave more of a history of the donut than it did receipes. Needs more easy donut receipes.

not what I thoughtApr 04, 2009
By K. Vaneyk Although this is a cute little book about the history of donuts, I guess I didn't read thoroughly enough. I thought it was a donut cookbook. There are a few recipes, but not many. It's more of a coffee table book.
