Rather takes the best of the Lone Star State—pecans, peaches, pralines, chiles, dulce de leche, German sausage—and turns out treats that taste like home, only better than anything homemade ever tasted before. There are the Bacon-Cheddar Scones, the Texas High Hairs Tarts (the only big hair Rather has ever had!), Fourth-of-July’s Fried Pies, Turbo-Charged Brownies with Praline Topping, pillowy Kolaches (yeasted buns with savory fillings), dulce de leche, German sausage—and turns out treats that taste like home, only better than anything homemade ever tasted before. Self-taught, Rather’s 150 utterly original recipes reflect her made-with-love-from-scratch philosophy and are guaranteed to get everyone fixin’ to bake. | | | Features: | |

looking forward to more recipesJan 01, 2010 I bought this book before the holidays and finally got a chance to try it. The Texas tortilla soup was a little involved, but the best tortilla soup I have ever had. I am looking forward to my next chance to try a recipe.
my first cakeNov 16, 2009 I made the Tuxedo Cake in this book for my friend's birthday, and it turned out to be one of the best cakes I have ever had. I am no baker (it was actually my first time baking a cake), but I can't wait to try out other recipes in this book! The recipes include a variety of desserts, snacks, light meals, and drinks that are suitable for various occasions. I wish there is a picture for every recipe, but I am very happy with it.
I also made the pumpkin roll for Thanksgiving dinner, and again, nice turnout, lots of compliments. My pumpkin roll was gone before the pumpkin pie and the apple pie from other guests!!
Looks amazingOct 05, 2009 I am married to a Texan and when I looked through this book i was so excited to see some of my husbands favorite treats. I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and haven't been able to try any of the recipes but as soon as I'm back I will try every recipe in this book.
Tuxedo heavenAug 09, 2009 Imagine, a statuesque, 10" beauty clad in dark glistening ganache that offers tantalizing glimpses of smooth, whipped cream beneath. Then imagine biting into a slice of this beauty and being rewarded with a taste of rich, moist chocolate cake and lightly sweetened fresh cream.
I have just described the best selling Tuxedo Cake from Rebecca Rather's cafe. This cake looks magnificent and will feed many. Whilst it is not overly sweet, it is a very tall cake and a tiny slice will suffice.
My husband thinks I'm being overly lyrical with my description of the cake but he doesn't get it coz he didn't bake it. Anyway, don't take my word for it, bake it and experience it for yourself.
This is the only recipe I have tried (so many recipes so little time) so the five stars are for this cake alone. However, I can usually tell if a cookbook is going to be a star or a dud and I can safely say this one falls in the former category.
The Pastry QueenApr 26, 2009 The baking book was excellent and has wonderful recipes in it.
The tips are very helpful and it just is what I had hoped it would be.
I am very, very satisfied.
